St. Ignatius Mission
Whether staying near St. Ignatius for a few days to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and the beauty of the valley, or if passing through from Missoula to Glacier National Park, it is worth it to take some time to stop at the St. Ignatius mission. Nestled near the Mission Mountains, the location was originally chosen for its beauty, as well as its access to rich resources such as fertile land, wood, fish and game.
The church structure was built over 125 years ago and houses some of Montana’s most beautiful murals and religious art. The 58 murals were painted by Brother Joseph Carignano, a cook at the mission who had no training in art.
The mission is located on the Flathead Indian Reservation and shows a blend of the catholic and native cultures. In the back of the mission, look for two extraordinary paintings: the Salish Lord and Lord's mother (in Native American form).
On the grounds is a log structure that originally housed the sisters who came to live at the mission. There is also a gift shop which sells religious items and displays Indian and Mission artifacts.
Located just 12 minutes south of Nine Pipes, and 20 minutes from the National Bison Range, there is plenty of Montana to experience in the St. Ignatius area.
