Voss Inn
The Elliott Room is a rich burgundy and pale rose colored suite with a private sitting room. It adjoins the Chisholm Room, which makes these two rooms ideal for a family or friends. It is also very popular with people travelling with a child, inasmuch as the sitting room is equipped with a single hide-a-bed/love seat. The room is situated towards the back of the house, off the main street overlooking the side garden and the back yard and is furnished with an antique brass and iron king-size bed and a drop-leaf table that conveniently opens up for in-room dining or paperwork. The extra large old fashioned porcelain tub is perfect for stretching out and having a long soak!
Robert’s Roost is the only room in the house with it’s own private deck off the bedroom, overlooking the back yard, which makes this one of the most popular rooms in summer and fall. It is decorated in shades of deep green and white, with wicker furniture and a large ornamental turn of the century fireplace. The large walk-in closet provides plenty of room for an extended stay.
The Armstrong Room adjoins the Pease Room, which makes the pair ideal for a family. It was recently redecorated in shades of green and peach in a warm, cozy Victorian style. The spacious bathroom has a large old-fashioned porcelain tub, which is perfect for long, relaxing baths.
The Pease Room is the perfect room for a family of three. It has vivid colors and a warm coral-colored 14-foot coved ceiling. It is furnished with an antique brass and iron queen-size bed as well as a twin bed, an ornate ornamental turn of the century hearth and a comfortable Victorian platform rocker. The dining table opens to provide plenty of room to eat breakfast or to work. The oversized clawfoot tub invites lingering, refreshing bubble baths (bubbles provided by the Voss Inn!)
The Sartain Room, our only main floor room, is part of what was originally the ballroom. This very spacious room is decorated in soft mauves and tans for a restful atmosphere. The romantic bathing area, which closes with plush curtains, is separate from the in-room water closet. The large drop-leaf table opens to provide plenty of room for in-room dining or paperwork. There is ample space for an extra bed if needed.
The Voss Inn was originally constructed as a family residence for Matt W. Alderson and his bride, Martha Elizabeth, in 1883 for $5,000. Matt was a prominent journalist and mining engineer. He was manager and/or editor of several publications and also published articles promoting tourism and development in Bozeman. Matt and Martha Elizabeth lived only two short years in this house. Martha died in 1885, four days after losing her second baby girl. In despair, Matt moved out forever. The Alderson parlor is named in honor of Matt and Martha Alderson.
Col. Oliver Chisholm, a veteran of the Civil War, purchased the house in 1890. The Chisholms made major additions to the house, including a ballroom, billiard room and servant’s quarters, at least doubling its size. They also added an iron roof railing (widows walk), which was the first of its kind in Bozeman. It can be seen in the 1919 photographs hanging in the northwest corner of the parlor.
The Voss Inn has “endured” several owners and uses since the Chisholms sold it in 1911. It has been a fraternity house and an apartment building. In 1983 the building was purchased by Ken and Ruthmary Tonn with the intent of converting it to a bed and breakfast inn. After much opposition within the community and an unpleasant legal battle, the Tonns won the approval of the City Commission, obtained a grant from the Historical Society to help with the restoration, and opened the doors of Montana’s second bed and breakfast inn—Bozeman’s first—on March 8, 1984.
In May 1989, Ken and Ruthmary sold the Inn to Bruce and Frankee Muller. It has been their pleasure to continue the tradition of hospitality and to build on the Voss Inn’s reputation for excellence. They have completely redecorated the Alderson Parlor and the Armstrong Room and have replaced many of the less desirable antiques with beautiful ones. Frankee has added an award winning Victorian perennial garden which Matt and Martha surely would have done if they had been able to live and raise their family in this house as the Mullers do. Bruce and Frankee are proud to share the beauty of the Voss Inn with guests from all over the world.
