The Garden of One Thousand Buddhas

Garden of 1000 Buddhas

Just a short drive north of Missoula is The Garden of One Thousand Buddhas, a place of peace and tranquility nestled at the base of rolling hills in the Mission Mountains.  If you are in Missoula for a while, or on your way to Glacier National Park or Flathead Lake, plan on a very short detour to experience this one of a kind garden in Montana.

The buddhas have been cast on site.  They are arranged in a circle around the central figure of Yum Chenmo, the Great Mother.  The circle is connected to the center by “spokes” of buddhas.  There is something about the symmetry of the layout and the repetition of the buddha statues, contrasted by the gardens and the rolling hills as background that creates a space like no other.

You don’t have to be a Buddhist to enjoy this garden.  It is designed for everyone  Part of their goal is to have you recapture your joy, wisdom, and compassion.  As you spend some time there, you will find that you are feeling calmer, more peaceful, and joyful.  Well, no promises, but give it a try and see if you don’t come out saying that it was worth the stop.

The site is right off of highway 93, at 34574 White Coyote Road.  There are no big, flashy signs giving you warning for your turn off, so set your GPS so you know when to slow down for the turn.
