Flathead Lake Cherries

Cherry picking Montana

Montana is famous for its cherries, grown around the Flathead Lake.  The season is short, but there is an abundance of sweet, juicy cherries in July and early August throughout the Flathead Valley.

Want to pick your own cherries?  No problem!  Just take a ride around the east side of Flathead Lake and pull in at any U-Pick sign.  In typical Montana fashion, the farm stand workers will help you to don your cherry bucket and direct you to trees in the orchid which will have easily accessible cherries, ripe for the picking.  This usually comes with some helpful hints like, “no charge for eating along the way”, and “do not climb the trees, because the branches will not hold you”.

For those who do not want to take the time to pick their own cherries, fresh cherries are available at farm stands all along the lake, in Lakeside, Bigfork, Coram, Hungry Horse and many other towns in the Flathead Valley.  Buy a bag and taste how different fresh cherries taste from those that have been shipped through grocery outlets.

If you are in the Flathead Valley in cherry season, be sure to get some and see what all the fuss is about.
