Yellowstone Art Museum - Billings

One of the great things to do in Billings as the weather cools down, is to visit the Yellowstone Art Museum.  Its permanent collection emphasizes contemporary art from the northern Rockies and northern plains.  The Montana Collection contains over 2000 pieces inspired by today’s west.  Woodblock prints depicting the eastern part of Montana make up the Edith Freeman collection. Contemporary art is represented in the Poindexter Collection.  The largest collection of Will James’ work is housed in the museum.

In 2009, the Yellowstone Art Museum was the recipient of 50 works of art from The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection:  Fifty Works for Fifty States.  Only one museum in each of the fifty states was granted such a gift.

In a building behind the museum is the Visible Vault  Here is your chance to see where the museum stores their collection of over 7,400 pieces of art.  This is where you get an idea of what it is like to take in art, catalogue, store, and prepare it for display.  The artist in residence studio is also in the Visible Vault.

In addition to going to the museum to view the art, this is also a place to consider for your special event.  A perfect backdrop for your small wedding, business meeting, holiday party or rehearsal dinner.

Jan and Terry Wattles of The Crossings Bed and Breakfast in Billings recommend the Yellowstone Art Museum to their guests for a good half day activity.  Jan says that the museum has amazing special exhibits, the largest collection of Charlie Russell, and wonderful contemporary art.  The cafe in lower level has Mediterranean food and it is fun. Their guests always love it.
