Traveler's Rest

Just south of Missoula, as you head into the Bitterroot Valley, is the famed resting place for the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery, Traveler’s Rest. Lolo, MT, is the home of this historic site, a great place to stop and explore as you make your way through Montana.
Traveler’s Rest State Park has a great education center, where you can learn about the Lewis and Clark expedition. The explorers stopped at this place before heading west over the Bitterroot Mountains, and also on the way east, before splitting up for 6 weeks.
Archilogic digs have shown the exact sites where the men cooked and how the camp was laid out. Walk along the trails in the park and imagine what it was like in the early 1800s. Lolo Creek flows through the park. There are picnic areas and beautiful trees as well. Depending on how much information you want to read at the visitors center, plan an hour to 2 hours for this stop.
This is a Montana State Park. All standard fees apply. It is open all year round Check the website for details.
