Rattlesnake National Recreation and Wilderness Area

Just about 4 miles north of Missoula, MT, lies the Rattlesnake National Recreation and Wilderness Area.  This is a great place for biking, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and hunting.  The southern 3 miles of the NRA is quite accessible and more frequently used by visitors to the area.  Beyond that is the wilderness area for those that want a wilder and more rustic experience.

Keep your eye out for deer, elk, beaver, mountain goats, and black bears (no rattlesnakes, as far a we can tell!).  Spring and Fall are great for birding.  Over 40 species of birds have been sighted.  Bring your wild flower book, so that you can identify the various species along the trail.

There are several hiking trails including Woods Gulch, Sawmill, Rattlesnake Main, and Boulder Lake Trails.  Check the maps for hiking difficulty, including length of trail and elevation gain.  Also, check the website for information about bringing your dog along with you.

Mountain bikers are welcome on several of the trails.  Check to see which ones are best for you and your abilities.

Horseback riders, there is a trail for you.  The Rattlesnake Horse Trail provides space for horse trailers.  What a wonderful way to get out into nature and explore.

After a day in the wilderness, travel just a short distance back to your favorite B&B in Missoula or the surrounding area.  There you can clean up, relax, and hit the nightlife if you choose.
