Kerr Dam

Get ready for the spring runoff at the Kerr Dam near Polson, Montana. Located at the south end of Flathead Lake, on the Flathead River, the 9 mile drive out of Polson to the dam is well worth it. In the spring, all 14 spillgates are open helping to regulate the spring thaw and run off from the surrounding Rocky Mountains.
There is a short hike from the parking area to the dam and overlook. Benches along the way help to make your trip easier and also provide areas to rest for great views. White water rafting and fishing are also available in the area.
The dam is now officially named Selis Ksanka Qlispe and is controlled by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes in the Flathead. They are the first tribes in the United States to own and operate a major hydropower dam. The dam is 204 feet high and has 3 hydroelectric power generators. Make sure to look for signs that indicate the CSKT name, in order to find it easily.
It is an easy drive from places such as St. Ignatius, Somers or Bigfork. It also makes a great stopping place as you make your way from Missoula up to the Flathead Lake and Glacier National Park.
