Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge

Wildlife Refuge Stevensville MT

In the heart of the Bitterroot Valley, in Ravalli County lies the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge.  Just north of Stevensville, Victor, and Darby, Montana and 25 miles south of Missoula, MT, this area of natural beauty awaits.  It is nestled between the Bitterroot and Sapphire mountains, along the Bitterroot River.

Lee Metcalf is a wonderful place for blue ribbon fishing, hunting, bird watching, wildlife viewing, and photography.  The National Wildlife Refuge System is dedicated to maintaining the biological integrity of the area so that it can support wildlife.  It was created to support migratory birds, of which over 200 species have been reported.

The refuge was named to honor Senator Lee Metcalf, who grew up in Stevensville, and had  a love for the environment and fought to preserve it.  It is a great place to bring the kids for environmental education programs and learning how to live in conjunction with nature.  There are 2 nature trails, and a handicapped accessible path to the picnic area from the parking lot.

As you venture through the Bitterroot Valley, plan to make a stop at Lee Metcalf Refuge.  It is a piece of heaven in Montana, the last best place.
