Somers - Flathead Lake living

Historic Area

The little town of Somers lies at the northwest end of the Flathead Lake.  Once a ‘company town’ developed to manufacture railroad ties, it is now an idyllic area which overlooks the Flathead.  There is public access to the lake via a swimming area and also a boat launch. Paddleboards and kayaks are available to rent near the boat launch.  Don’t forget to catch the sailing races out of the yacht club on Tuesday and Fridays evenings.  If you are a sailor, check to see if they need an extra hand for the race.

Somers is centrally located to many of the activities around Flathead Lake.  The towns of Bigfork and Lakeside are nearby, as well as the Blacktail Mountain Ski Area.  Hiking trails are located at Blacktail as well as in the nearby Jewel Basin.  Don’t forget to bring your buckets for gathering huckleberries!  The east side of the lake has cherry orchids galore.  Pick up a bag at the local farm stand or pick your own.

Local activities include the Dragon Boat Races, the Spartan Race, the Wooden Boat Show, skijoring, downhill skiing and cross country skiing.  Swimming, fishing, kayaking, and boating are all favorite activities.  For less energetic activities, go into town to see the Somers Town Museum, open in the afternoons.  This museum shows the history of the railroad tie business and its impact on the town of Somers.
